If you have a horizontal sliding window that is difficult to open, it is likely because the rollers on the bottom edge of the sliding panel are not functioning properly.
Here are some steps you can take to try and fix a hard to open horizontal sliding window:
Clean the tracks: The first thing you should do is clean the tracks that the window slides on. Over time, these tracks can accumulate dirt and debris,
which can make it difficult for the window to slide. Use a small brush or vacuum to remove any dirt or debris from the tracks, and then wipe them down with a damp cloth.
Check the rollers
The rollers on the bottom edge of the sliding panel are what allow the window to move smoothly along the tracks.
If the rollers are damaged or not functioning properly, it can make it difficult to open the window. Inspect the rollers for any visible damage and clean them if necessary. If the rollers are damaged, have a flat spot and no longer roll then you will need to replace them.
Lubricate the rollers
If the rollers are in good condition, you may just need to lubricate them to help them move more smoothly. Use a silicone-based lubricant to lightly coat the axil and or bearings of the rollers, and then operate the window a few times to distribute the lubricant.
Adjust the rollers
If the rollers are not aligned properly, it can cause the window to stick. To adjust the rollers, you will need to locate the adjustment screws, which are usually located on the bottom of the window frame. Turn the screws to move the rollers up or down as needed to ensure that they are properly aligned with the tracks.
It is also good to wipe down the weatherstrips on the outer edge of the sliding panel and use a silicon-based lubricant to condition the mow hair; this will reduce friction when opening and closing the slider.
Check the hardware
If the above steps do not fix the problem, you should check the hardware on the window. Make sure that the screws and bolts are tightened properly and replace any hardware that is damaged or worn.
By following these steps, you should be able to fix a hard to open horizontal sliding window. If you are still having trouble, it may be necessary to call a professional for assistance.
